I like Max Weber, a sort of forerunner of Clifford Geertz (in my view anyway), he is the one who said man is an animal who is suspended is webs of significance he himself has spun. He developed theories of modernisation and secularisation too, and talked about charismatic leaders in a way that some have applied to cult and religious leaders with charismatic authority such as C T Russell.
