the best means to find A job today.

My son just out of the coast Guard just landed A

job after 2 months and 40 resume with two years

of college. Guess what, he was able to get the job

because A freind in the corporate office.

She said thru Job fairs, direct contact with the employer.

I have been out of the job market for years, so this

is all new to me. When I enter the job market (60,s)

I could find A job in one day, in fact in one day I had

    three jobs.

So , who you know, gets you A job today?

I suspect personal contacts are always the most helpful. Richard Bolles, who wrote What Color Is Your Parachute, suggests you can develop a sort of personal network by researching the company, then asking many questions, including secretaries and janitors.

I was always able to find a job just typing when I was young. There are websites that specialize in helping older people get jobs and start new careers. One I know is Interns over 40, a Linked-In group.

Bolles says responding to ads and automatically sending resumes is the least effective way.

He started his work as a jump off point from government financed work. The Labor Dept knew that certain people would make great workers but the market was not hiring them. Academics studied the problem.

Bolles and others say to use every opportunity for personal connection. Hand deliver resumes, give out business cards, go to events in the industry. Volunteering helps build a resume, too.

Yes or a friend of a friend of a friend, it's called "Networking" and it works. You just have to put it out there and many times you get great leads or an actual job, a few of my jobs happened that way.

Unemployment office has classes as well as jobs posted, and if you're looking for something in particular there's city college or volunteering or temporary/temp agencies (big now) as well as internships.

It can be trying to "put it out there." One thing that is clear is that job hunting businesses are having a heyday. People who can't find work for themselves in their fields are counseling others. The sheer number of books is overwhelming. I think it is best to do a balance of traditional resume and want ads and alternative strategies, such as research, building a network.

It is hard to find the correct tone. You have to emphatic that you want a job but you can't beg or seem desperate.

Oh, I forgot to mention job clubs. They typically are groups of other people seeking jobs who offer support to each other. Most of the job search is determined by psychology. Many people give up after so many months. If you continue, despite feelings of exhaustion and despair, your chances go up.
