Equally, here was a man well-known for lack of interpersonal awareness; nowadays we might refer to some of his behavior as "asperger-like" - so completely wrapped up in his own private world of Biblical interpretation that "nurturing" human relationships never featured in his repertoire. Yet within this remote "personality" was an oddly open power display involving a spa and hand-picked "boys".

Steve2, that is very interesting. I had not thought of the "aspergers" like symptoms - but like you say, this was not only a power display but was also oddly out of character for someone with such a distant personality.

Or, maybe it was just a sign of slow onset dementia...who knows.

He lived up in Wallkill. This was before they acquired the Patterson property. The JW old-folks home if you will. He had a nurse attend to him. They kept his GB office in Brooklyn for him until he died.

Does anybody remember the long-ago post by (IIRC the posters name correctly) Seven006? It was called "Freddy Brown Shoes". It was about how the poster (a graphic art specialist) went to Bethel for a month or so to help their art department with airbrushing techniques.

He met Freddy on this trip - was introduced to him as they were walking to work one morning.

I could not get over how funny it was - he reports that Freddy was actually talking to his shoes!!! Funny at the time, but also quite sad because it is obvious that he was already into at least first stage dementia while he was still actively setting doctrine for the WTBTS. Very sad.

Yes I remember Brown shoes. I think it was posted on Freeminds.

It was posted here too, but I cannot find it just now - It is worth bringing up to the top every now and then. Not only for the description of Freddy, but also the very dry descriptions of the reality of life and work at Bethel in that day. It includes real-life descriptions of how dysfunctional the Bethel art department was and how only one or two had the slightest art or photographic ability at all and were suppressed by Bethel politics. I assume it was in the late 70s or early 80s.

    Horrible personality?

I don't know I never met him.......I only heard him speak at Twickenham a few times. He had a booming voice and a delivery style that broke every rule in the Ministry School Guidebook. A real thunderguts preacher.

That is all I can say for Certain....

James - I agree. In the early stages of dementia, the individual is usually aware they are slowly losing their cognitive capacities. It's so hard for family and friends to come to terms with too. In Fred Franz's case it's all the more sad because he had fervently believed that the end of "this system was biblically ring-fenced for the mid-1970s. I have heard audio recordings of his public talks: He was one firmly dogmatic man. He knew what was around the corner and there was no expressed room for doubt. The end was fast approaching and brothers and sisters you better be ready!

Like many JWs he would not have had a concept in his head that he would grow old and die "in this system of things". Sad fact is, the world doesn't end but our lives do. Freddie's dead and gone and the system lives on...

Mr. Brownshoes (In the style od Guns&Roses)

In my Watchtower office by nine

I don't worry about nothing, no

Cause worryin' a waste of Theocratic time

    Tonight's meeting starts at seven

    We get out about nine

    Brown shoes off around eleven

Now... to the spa for bethel boy time

    I've been talkin' with

    Mr. Brownshoes

    He's been talkin'

    He won't leave me alone

We use to talk a little but a little wouldn't do

So a little got more and more

I just kept tryin' to tell him bout my antitype letter

Said this antitype is better than before

The term "pompous exccentric self-absorbed prick" comes to mind.

And yes, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had a form of Asperger's.

His later age dementia doesn't erase what he was during his lifetime, just adds a tragic and ironic twist to his life story.
