I love Sam Harris. Letter to a Christian Nation is a great book. I used it to help someone in their unconversion. In less than a year I have converted more people than I ever would have as a JW.

Great Quote: 'It is a very strange god who would make salvation depend on believing in him, based upon bad evidence' Sam Haris

Very well made points.....no mumbo jumbo! No specious reasoning or arguments....of course this subject is near and dear to me.

Interesting rebuttal (unrelated to OP video) on why well-being≠good morality. So morality, as defined by Harris, would need some reworking.

And on the flip side, some believe the text below contains morality that didn't/doesn't need reworking...

Kill People Who Don't Listen to Priests

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

    Kill Witches

You should not let a sorceress live. (Exodus 22:17 NAB)

    Kill Homosexuals
"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

    Kill Fortunetellers

A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death. (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)

    Death for Hitting Dad

Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death. (Exodus 21:15 NAB)

    Death for Cursing Parents

    1) If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness. (Proverbs 20:20 NAB)

    2) All who curse their father or mother must be put to death. They are guilty of a capital offense. (Leviticus 20:9 NLT)

    Death for Adultery

If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)

    Death for Fornication

A priest's daughter who loses her honor by committing fornication and thereby dishonors her father also, shall be burned to death. (Leviticus 21:9 NAB)

For all practical intents and purposes, a lot of christians simply do not endorse that behavior, nor practice it. Does it smack down their infallible Bible affirmation? Yes.

Does it mean the morality christians practice and try to attain to is not worthwhile? I don't know, you tell me.

Remember, that argument mainly works only against the OT and as I said, no matter how hypocritical it sounds, that morality is simply not upheld nor condoned for a majority of christians.

The argument does well to disprove a loving God, however.

I may be missing the point of Dr. Harris, but I think this is applicable:

First, modern man has walked the Earth in recorded history for thousands of years. Depending on what you believe to be true, it even be tens of thousands of years. The man referred to as Jesus in the New Testament shows up in the last 2000 years of man's recorded history. When he is 30 years old he spend 3.5 years preaching his philosphy, which is related to, but different than the religious beliefs of the Jews as written in the Old Testiment.

Further, the religion known as Christianity did not begin until after Jesus' death. It really didn't begin as we know it until after the Romans adopted it and changed it to suit their needs, until after Martin Lurther, and after the protestant movement. So, now that really shrinks the amount of time that "Christianity" has been around in comparison to man's hsitory.

The point is this - There is no way that, if there is a god, it is the one of the Bible. Further, the YHWH god of the Old Testament conflicts with the teachings of the alleged man and son of YHWH, Jesus. Going a step further, most professed Christians are not Christians. They're just fans. Many things condoned by Christians are in direct violation of Jesus' teachings on showing love to our fellow man.
