Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf made some comments that are sure to raise eyebrows everywhere. Speaking of the whole Islamic world, he said:

"Today we are the poorest, the most illiterate, the most backward, the most unhealthy, the most un-enlightened, the most deprived, and the weakest of all the human race"

He urged for a "jihad" (!) against this backwardsness by Islamic states concentrating their resources on education, especially in areas of scientific and technological development.

Wow! I think I may have just gained a hero.

I wonder if history will shortly gain a martyr?

This guy better watch his back!

His stance during the recent [ongoing?] conflict had already angered a lot of radical Islamic groups.

I'd have thought a professional politician might be more inclined to try and build a few bridges rather than isolating the most dangerous sections of his society.

Broadly speaking he's right of course - but did he have to belittle his own people this way in front of the whole world? Many Muslims feel embarrassed enough as it is by the actions of a few fundamentalists. What will this do other than to inflame them again.

"Today we are the poorest, the most illiterate, the most backward, the most unhealthy, the most un-enlightened, the most deprived, and the weakest of all the human race"

Though he directed this statement to all Islamic countries, Pakistan
is a poor country, with many illiterate people, but yet, they
    have nuclear weapons and missiles.

Poorest? Uranium enrichment and weaponization of that uranium costs
    BILLIONS of dollars!

Illiterate? Most people in Pakistan cannot read, yet they have
a some scientists and engineers that can design nuclear weapons, and they have the technological infra-structure to build the weapons.

Backward? Though having weapons of mass destruction, their society
suffers from lack of educational programs.

Unhealthy? Public health programs are poorly funded. Uranium
minning and enrichment also are making the environment unhealthy
    and dangerous to live in.

Un-enlightened? Enlightenment does not come from the ability to
    make nuclear weapons.

Deprived? A Pakistani official said once "We will eat grass in order
to get nuclear weapons." The people are deprived as a result.

Weakest? Though they can explode nuclear weapons, what else can they
do? What constructive activity? They are weak.

The responsibility for the ill-state of the country, and the Islamic
people is with the governments and the policies. One can only hope
that they will change the course in which they are heading.

    Thanks Jan,

He sure is brave!!!! I wonder if the Bush Administration has made behind the scenes promises and agreements of mutual support with this President, causing him to feel somewhat secure when making these kinds of kamikaze statements in his part of the world?

If so, then this is rather foreboding for what may lie ahead.
