KIEV (Reuters) - A 77-year-old Ukrainian man won a jar full of sour cream for coming first in a dumpling eating contest and then promptly died, local media reported on Wednesday.

Ivan Mendel ate 10 dumplings in half a minute to win first place and a one-liter jar of sour cream in the contest held in the town of Tokmak in the southeastern Zaporizhya region on September 18, Fakty I Kommentarii newspaper said.

Shortly afterwards, Mendel became unwell and died, according to local news websites.

Dumplings, called "vareniki" in the former Soviet republic, are a staple of Ukrainian cuisine and are often stuffed with a range of fillings from mushrooms to cherries.

I've seen a few dumplings to die for, but I could only manage two.

I was at a friend's place a few weeks ago, and they were watching Man vs Food. It's the same type of thing, and I told them that it wasn't entertaining for me to watch someone trying to eat themselves to death.

It seems to me that gluttony is not something to be proud of ... these eating contests are ridiculous.

I swear, I can see society becoming more and more like that of ancient Rome --- look at the TV shows,,, the above-mentioned Man vs Food, Wipeout, Fear Factor, Jersey Shore,,,, gluttony, revelling in watching others being violent, uggh, humans truly are the lowest of species when left unchecked.

TV Reality shows are a scourge in general. No script, no screenplay, no imagination and no actors to pay . . . bleech!
