I was 14 years old and a high school freshman.

We were at school when we got the news.

Girls began to cry, teachers wrung their hands, some of the more outspoken senior boys began to curse and throw desks around.

The guidance counselor quickly put a stop to that.

The principal called an assembly where we were implored to calm down and not act rashly.

    It was a surreal day.

I had no idea until recently that King was such a huge advocate for the rights of workers and unions:

    Oh, yes.

He was in Memphis at the time of his death to support a sanitation workers' strike.

If you think about it, he would have had to be. If you can't support yourself and your family, you can't do much else. Poverty is a prison. Workers without rights are not much better than slaves. Look back on the coal miners and the Company Store. Or the garment workers.

Yep, they did a hoffa on him not because of civil rights, but to disable middle-class empowerment.
