I love Big Love, although I think the decision to end the series this season was wise. The writing is ebbing. It is over the top. No one could life so on the edge constantly. The polygamist, Bill, is painted as sympathetic on the surface. He has this veneer of normaltiy. Now I see him as nutty as the other polygamists. The Mormon church must hate it.
The parallels to the Witnesses are obvious. It would be nice if Witnesses taught the prosperity ethic that the LDS church teaches. I live on the East Coast so I am curious. If I lived in Utah, I'd hate them and their culture. When I'm drawn into the family, they seem like a family. A wider view makes me see them as Witnesses, hostage to beliefs. I'm glad HBO took some effort to write this in a well-crafted fashion.
I've read some blogs by Mormons about BIg Love. Evidently, it doesn't accurately reflect Mormonism. Larger issues are focused on Mormonism. He is so obviously truly married to his first wife. HIs marriage was monogamous until his wife had life-threatening cancer.
I enjoy it but I look forward to the next HBO show. Also, I am so very grateful that Witnesses were not used so I can relax and enjoy the entertainment without going thru kleenex.
