This got me thinking about what it really means to be a "Family"

I came from what many might call a "normal" or average family.

    A father,mother,brother and sisters.

As I got older I got married, then we had a son and felt like we were like any other family.

It was all I ever knew and as far as I could tell it was what constitutes a family.

As I've gotten older I've seen that not all "families" would necessarily fit the preconceived mold I had of what it meant to be a family.

The following short video (only 3 minutes) is very well articulated in what it means to be a family.

The speaker is Zach Wahls a 19 year old student at the university of Iowa.

His words have much wisdom for one so young.

I recall the cartoon Lilo and Stitch that gave an excellent view on family:

Ohana, no one gets left behind or forgotten.

Family are those we love and care for, you guys are my JWN family.

Sometimes families are big and sometimes they are small, sometimes they are broken and sometimes we are "stuck" with them, but they always come in all different sizes and what makes them family is the love that is shared by the people in it.

    Excellent speech!

"Can gays really raise kids? "

Are gays human beings? Yes. Then Yes, they CAN ... and DO raise children.

The most important thing is love and to be raised in a loving environment. I'd rather be raised by a loving gay couple than an abusive heterosexual couple.

This young man speaks very well -- way better than I could.

I don't think that is a compariosn that gives any credit to the gay couple, comparing ANYONE to abusives anythings is not the way to go.

But I understand that you mean.

I am sort of in the middle with this, I don't think I have enough info to have an opionion about it...

I mean, can tow gay women raise a child ( male or female) in a loving home? Of course but how influenced by the lifestle that the child is sxposed to will the child be andwoudl that cause any issues?

    I just don't know.

This is what got me about how young he is and yet can articulate so fluently.

Same with me Psac. As far as a child needing a mother and a father it used to seem so simple to me.

But as you can see by the way he presents himself as well as his arguments to the Iowa legislature, he seems to have done very well for himself without the benefit of a male role model in the home.

And I sure don't have all the answers but I guess only time will tell.

So I'll agree with you on that I just don't know.

Abuse is abuse. Doesn't matter who is perpetrating it. It is wrong.

Love is love. It doesn't matter who is perpetrating it. It is right.

Sexual orientation has nothing to do with either. THAT is what my point was about.

There are many kids raised by abusive heterosexual couples. There are many examples on this board. But what was/is done about it? Nothing. Now, if it had been a gay couple doing the abuse, I believe the results would have been very different.

There wouldn't be any issues according to Zach Wahls who has lived it.

Most of this comes from how he was raised. I know because of how I was raised. He was raised in a supportive environment that encouraged him and helped him to speak like this.

    I was not.
