Hi there, Im Marko. I had two very nice Jehovahs Witnesses at my door last week. They left me a tract to read about the end of times, and the paradise Earth etc. It really triggered off some memories for me as my parents were Jehovahs Witnesses a long time ago. I was around 9 years old at the time, I'm 41 now. They fell away from the religion but my mother continues as a practising Catholic, which she was prior to her 8 years association with the JW's.

So Ive been reading over a few things about JW's beliefs and finding quotes from necessary scriptures from the good book. Can I ask what the JW's think about the Mayan Calendar events that are supposed to be taking place 21/12/12? I understand the scripture regarding the end of the world coming as a thief in the night and no one will ever know when this will happen, but has anyone watched any documentaries on this? Is it dismissed as nonsense within the JW society? I actually think I know the answer to that, and it'll be about faith in the end, but it would be interesting to read some balanced views.

    Welcome to the forum Marko.

By my calculations, your parents would have been JWs during the 1975 debacle and left a few years after, as I did.

There have been hundreds of doomsday predictions for the end of the world. The watchtower has made quite a few of them. None of them have even been close to having a fulfilment. Even the 'invisible' fulfilments claimed in Watchtower literature have been re-defined after the date and bear no resemblance to what they originally predicted.

The WT hasn't said anything about the Mayan 'prediction'. It isn't a prediction anyway. It's just a calender. When it gets to the end, it starts again. There are no ancient texts that attach end times to it. That is a modern theory, and its proponents will be re-defining their prophesies when the current ones fail. Like the Watchtower, none of them will admit they have been a bunch of complete prats and apologise to their audience.

If anyone offers you salvation in exchange for control over your life or your wallet, it pays to thoroughly check their sources. My parents have been preaching armageddon soon for seventy years. If they had checked the Watchtower's track record before they joined, they could have done many of the things they have left until 'the New World' comes. Now they are too fragile and have to watch TV docos of the places they always wanted to visit.

    Cheers

    Chris

There is really nothing to indicate that the 12/21/12 date is anything more than the end of the Mayan calendar. Nothing indicates they think it would be the end of all things. Experts believe they probably would have had some sort of celebration and then restarted the calendar.
