Freedom is the freedom to say that Jerusalem fell to Babylon in 587. If that is granted, all else follows.

Coming to realize that as a Witness, I am not free to think or say something that might be true had quite an influence on my awakening.

It is like another gem from George Orwell's 1984

"Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious."

This one describes somewhat the paranoia during the first few months of consciousness ...

  • "It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself--anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face...; was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime..."
    - George Orwell, 1984, Book 1, Chapter 5
