A little bit of Cleveland history: Bloodless surgery in Cleveland, Ohio, can be accredited to Gene Tenke who approached and eventually convinced St. Vincent Charity Hospital to perform bloodless surgery for Jehovah’s Witnesses. Cleveland Clinic several years later followed suit. But 50-60 years ago, Richard Sheppard delivered babies for pregnant J.W. women who did not want blood transfusions. (Do not think this applied to cesearean sections.)
Richard Sheppard was the brother of Sam Sheppard who was convicted of killing of his wife, Marilyn, in a notorious trial which was overturned by attorney F. Lee Bailey all the way to the Supreme Court. (Prior to his murder trial, Sam Sheppard may have performed bloodless surgery for J.W.s but not certain.)
