Right after my wife and I left the jw religion about two years ago she went ahead and started to study with the mormons.
I thought that it would be something that would pass after awhile because of the similarities between the two religions,,,, boy was I wrong. She grabbed onto this new cult and just ran with it. She was baptized several months later.
I have been trying to show her the truth about her new beliefs, but I was just wasting my breath and time doing this. So, I have been trying to be accepting about her new friends, beliefs, and assignments.
I have attended special Christmas shows, gone to different locations such as carthage to be civil, and accepting to her.
Well, last night basically just wrecked it all for me.
She invited two of the "missionary boys" over for dinner, they have been here before and they seem pretty normal.
As we were finishing dinner, one of them asked for a copy of the book of mormon and started to spout off about how “inspiring, and truthful this book is. I was confused as to what he was doing.
My 22 year old son was with us and most of the conversation was directed at him. So I bit my tongue and just watched, I know his feelings about this religion (he thinks it is looney) and just watched.
After listening to the “inspired” presentation and my son’s spot on reply, (he is so civil, and respectful, I was just amazed at his composure) they turned to me and asked, “So MIB, what are your feelings about the bom, and Jesus Christ”?
The conversation then went basically like this :
Me: well I do not believe one word of your book.
Them: why not ? You know that is inspired by God and the prophets ?
Me: Well for one thing, history does not agree with it, and archeology cannot prove anything that is written in it .
Them: well you know many stories in the bom have been proven by history and archeology.
Me: Stories that have been "proven" by other mormons, not by any respectable historians or actual found artifacts.
Them: well, nothing from the Bible can be proven either. And besides Satan is doing his best to hide the truth of the bom from people today, so it sounds like he is being pretty successful.
Me: really? What in the world are you talking about.
Them: well, you have to actually READ the bom to understand what we are talking about. If you would do this you would understand what God really wants people to be doing today. In fact he actually will talk to you and help you come to a greater understand of his purpose using the bom.
Me: Let me state again, I repect your right to believe what you want, but I do not believe anything in your book,I read the Bible on my own time, I look at creation, I actually experience life outside of the bounds of a manmade religion and yes by doing these things God does talk to me, he has never mentioned to me that your religion is the only way.
Them: looking at their watches,,, well its getting late, we should be going.
After they left I was just furious at my wife, how the H#%$ can you sit there and allow these boys to spout off about how true their religion is?
We were jw’s for about 30 years, didn’t that time show you anything about how cults/religions work?
I left and took a walk for two hours while I calmed down.
Any suggestions on how to handle this? I feel like the “unbelieving mate” that was always brought up at witness meetings/conventions. There is no balanced way to deal with this. Either I am a “wicked person” to them, or (will never happen) I cave in and join this religion
Thanks for listening,
MIB (who has a massive, killer headache from dealing with this BS).
