They about 60 to 70 years behind the Witnesses.
Just finished their formative (Russell) phase with founder L. Ron Hubbard, now in the secondary (Rutherford) exploitation phase with takeover artist David Miscaevage.
They had a breaking away when Hubbard died and Miscaevage took over and shoved out the other inner circle people - just like the early Bible Students.
They are certainly every bit as controlling of their members, every bit teaching just as oddball a belief system, and every bit as greedy for money for the central organization. They are every bit as intolerant of people who leave them as the JWs.
Yes, many parallels.

After listening further, I changed the topic to "Cult" discussion rather than just "Scientology" discussion because there is a significant amount of talk about cults in general and even the use of the term "cult" and the desire to find an appropriate, accurate, term to use for "mind control."

It upsets me that in general, media outlets and people like Hassan are far more willing to go after groups like Scientologists than Mormons or JWs. Scientologists are insignificant in number, despite their high-profile converts.

High-profile = Funding and Exposure.
It is unfortunate but the reality is that these types of folks need money and exposure to do their job. Scientology brings that to a greater extent than Mormons, JWs, and other cults.
This discussion is really worth listening to.

Actually, Scientology is far worse than the WTS as far as control and all that is concerned.
