I walked away from all things Watchtower in the late '80's. In Dec 1999 I bought a computer, connected to the net and typed "Jehovah's Witnesses" into a search engine. Over the next week my printer almost went into meltdown as I printed off reams of information about the WBTS.
One of the best things for me was discovering Gary Bussman's 'Armageddon Okies'. They made great bedtime reading and I laughed so much it hurt. I could see real similarities between his characters in hayseed america and the ones i'd come to know in rural australia. I am still amazed that the antics of his country bumpkin JW's are so alike those actually done in congregations over here. I think Gary has a real talent in sharing his understanding JW thinking and practise in backwoods places.
