Halloween Oct. 30 1938. Orson Wells radio show presented a "War of the Worlds" based drama as though it was really happening! UFO's landing in parks, spreading "poison gas' "Death rays" ....during the drama many actors playing radio reporters pretended to be overcome by the gas and died! This lead to MASS PANIC! Hundreds of calls to Police...people claiming to "smell the gas" or see "bright lights in the distance." Many left their homes in terror.

Just goes to show how the human mind can be tricked. The "end of the world" scenario, and UFO's, men from Mars attacking.

It's true. If the broadcast hadn't interrupted the show to inform those who arrived late to listen to the "news" that it was not real, but only a re-telling of "War of the Worlds" with a modern theme ... there would have been mass suicides to avoid being captured by the martians. You can listen to the actual broadcast on YouTube and judge for yourself how you might have reacted if you didn't know it was just for entertainment.

Orson Welles gives a realistic performance of "War of the Worlds" (1938)

Beautifully staged with everything from various actors to sound effects brought the horror to the airwaves.

    The aftermath.
