"If so, the star, which is 600 light-years away, will already have exploded — and we'll soon be in for a spectacular, and perfectly safe, interstellar fireworks show."
Kewl......when do I set up the telescope?
Will it be visible before armageddon comes, do you think?

I think most everything will be visible before Armageddon.

Armageddon started on betelgeuse 600 yrs ago. Perhaps, yhwh's chariot rides the photons of space. He should be here 'soon'. ;) We could prepare for a party for him, laying up a bunch of sheep, goats and bulls in our freezers. Just like old times;)

Whatever you do don't go outside and say its name three times!
Hmmm... I'd think the final collapse would be much quicker than a couple of decades. The thing with iron is that it takes more energy to fuse iron into heavier elements than it creates. Eventually the iron core will collapse so fast that all the protons and electrons will fuse to form neutrons forming a neutron star. If the star is very massive not even the strong nuclear force can overcome gravity, and it will collapse to form a black hole. The final collapse of the core is supposed to be very quick, like a fraction of a second, the rest of the star falls in and compresses the core further releasing a huge amount of energy and the star goes kerplowie, and this is how we get all the elements heavier than iron.
