I think it is called a yantra.
It is a Hindu mandala of sorts.
I think it is tied into "sacred geometry".

It's an identicon ... a visual 'hash' of the posters IP address
It helps to show whether different accounts are being used from the same IP address or if a poster has a constantly changing address ... both possible signs of a troll
