Mercury in Cough Syrup..

The guys in China that put the melamine in the milk and food products were just given the death sentence. If they haven't been executed already, they will be soon. The woman who was in on it got life in prison. No fooling around there.

HFC has long been known as a dangerous substance linked to obesity and other diseases. It is not a natural substance but it's used in everything from ketchup, jams, sauces to medicines, because it's cheaper than sugar. Now we find out the FDA has known that it has also been contaminated with mercury but did nothing. Idiots. sammieswife.

Foodies and nutritionists alike have been griping about high fructose corn syrup for years, and the industry has responded with an "astroturf" campaign and a level of secrecy generally reserved for military officials or secret societies (see Corn Refiners' Association president Audrae Erickson's stonewalling performance in King Corn).

Of course, I wouldn't want to show my hand either, if the making of my product could be described as the undertaking of a "small Manhattan Project" (see eye-glazing production info here). But as it turns out, the HFCS industry has been hiding some major skeletons in its closet -- according to the IATP study (pdf), over 30% of products containing the substance tested positive for mercury.

What makes this news truly shocking is not just that the manufacturers of high fructose corn syrup would put consumers' health at risk, but that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) knew about the mercury in the syrup, and has been sitting on this information since 2005.

Here's the connection, according to the IATP press release (pdf): The IATP study comes on the heels of another study, conducted in 2005 but only recently published by the scientific journal, Environmental Health, which revealed that nearly 50 percent of commercial HFCS samples tested positive for the heavy metal. Renee Dufault, who was working for the FDA at the time, was among the 2005 study's authors. In spite of Dufault's involvement in the study, the FDA sat silent on this one for three years, and in fact last August, allowed manufacturers to call the sweetener "natural."

Here's how the mercury gets in there, according to Janet at the Ethicurean:

How did the heavy metal get in there? In making HFCS -- that "natural" sweetener, as the Corn Refiners Associaton likes to call it -- caustic soda is one ingredient used to separate corn starch from the corn kernel. Apparently most caustic soda for years has been produced in industrial chlorine (chlor-alkali) plants, where it can be contaminated with mercury that it passes on to the HFCS, and then to consumers.

And more from the press release:

"While the FDA had evidence that commercial HFCS was contaminated with mercury four years ago, the agency did not inform consumers, help change industry practice or conduct additional testing."

    And on why this matters:

"Mercury is toxic in all its forms," said IATP's David Wallinga, M.D., and a co-author in both studies. "Given how much high fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the FDA to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply."

In China, heads might roll over a scandal like this one, at least if the country received global attention for its allowing corrupt health officials' greasy palms to come before, um, public health.

Of course, in this country, the FDA's "neck" is safe. But what about the health of American consumers? Let's see the Corn Refiners' Association try to spin this one.

I'm not surprised. Allopathic medicine is full of poisons--even properly prescribed, properly administered drugs that are free of contamination have been known to kill many people (an acceptable risk when it's a true emergency; not an acceptable risk to manage long term conditions or to suppress a lousy cough).

Another thing I find unacceptable is that the Establishment does not want anyone to market foods to prevent colds in the first place. They are insistent on creating these food poisoning incidents (especially when the regular flu can be mistaken for "salmonella"). They then use these to create outcries for irradiation and pasteurization of natural foods, which kills the nutrients needed to support the immune system. And that is going to create more food poisoning in the long run (which is not intentionally planted), plus cancer, colds, flus, pneumonia, and just about every infection known. Plus, supplements that actually prevent you from catching colds in the first place cannot have anything more than a vague "May help support the immune system* *This statement has not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure any disease." statement on the label.

If people could find the foods and supplements that prevent colds in the first place, they wouldn't need so much cough syrup (mercury or not). They also wouldn't need so much Nyquil, Comtrex, Tylenol, Vicks, or any other cold medicine. Which would make the companies that make those poisons take a bath, send their stock prices tumbling, and prevent them from seeding people for other diseases. And, knowing the regulators, they would rather jail those who are exposing these secrets and keep the problems going (along with the cancers, brain diseases, diabetes, and heart disease that is "unexplained") than fix the problems.

Sammielee...I am so glad you posted this. Look what I just read today... IT'S IN EVERYTHING WE EAT!!! And the stuff we think is "organic" is a deception, too. It can be "grown" organically, and then irradiated, and they don't have to inform the consumer.

    excerpt:

Study Finds High-Fructose Corn Syrup Contains Mercury

    The Washington Post
    January 27, 2009

Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies.

HFCS has replaced sugar as the sweetener in many beverages and foods such as breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments. On average, Americans consume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS, but teens and other high consumers can take in 80 percent more HFCS than average.

“Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply,” said the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies.

Cough syrup? Don't you mean corn syrup? Or maybe you mean HFCS that is in cough syrup.

Another thing I find unacceptable is that the Establishment does not want anyone to market foods to prevent colds in the first place.

The "common cold" is caused by a virus. You can't prevent that by just eating the right food.

It can be "grown" organically, and then irradiated, and they don't have to inform the consumer.

Please tell me you're not afraid of irradiated food. Going through the irradiation process kills any potentially harmful microorganisms that may remain on the food after it has been picked/processed/washed/whatever. It's a good thing. It does not make your food radioactive. It does not make it less "natural."

I used to love playing with Mercury when I was a kid. I had a handful of it in a big vial, and would love putting it in my hand and roll it around, poking my finger through it. It was very heavy too! Good times!

After reading this thread, I went into the pantry, and grabbed a bottle of Corn Syrup. I was sooooo excited to relive a part of my childhood! I poured a bunch into the palm of my hand and NOTHING. Just a big, sticky, runny mess.

Exactly who is this "Establishment" with a capital E that you speak of?

Oh, and I know Stewie already said this but I just have to say it again. The common cold is caused by a virus. The virus enters your body through the air, through unwashed fingers in the mouth and ironically enough, probably from unwashed organic produce. It is killed on the irradiated kind at least until more infected shoppers who don't wash their hands fondle it in the supermarket.

The virus is then killed by your immune system (hopefully, or else you die!). Granted, a strong immune system boosted by healthful food full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals may help to fight off a cold virus faster. But nothing "prevents" the virus, least of all food, oh except, ironically again, antivirals manufactured by the "poisoners" and approved by the FDA.

I can't help wondering what the internet would look like if more people actually read scientific books on biochemistry, instead of the latest unsubstantiated conspiracy theories.

    Cowboy,

There were some guys in my science class that did that. They lost balls of mercury all over the classroom. I had a few of them, too. We did not know there was any danger in this. Heck, you would think the science teacher would have said something. Do you know that today they would evacuate and call in a hazmat team?

About 12 years later I heard some bad news about the 2 guys that played with the mercury a lot. They had severe health problems. One had shakes and couldn't remember from one minute to next. Of course, nobody ever said it had anything to do with mercury. I bet it didn't even occur to them that it could have caused those health problems.

I think dentists have known the hazards of using it as well, but just sort of shrug it off.

Knowing what I know now, I think all of this has been a well conceived plan to dumb down the masses as well as generate business for the medical industry. I think we have been deliberately poisoned, not only by religions, but by every toxic chemical that can be used. It is one way to seperate the classes and maintain a pure "elite class" of better bloodline and privelige. These poisons have kept us from reaching our potential and have shortened and crippled our lives. And I believe it has been DELIBERATE.

Yes, we know you do, but do you have one single shred of evidence!

Now that I think about it, this would explain a lot of cameo d's posts!
