As with my other blog posts, I've tried to keep a non-aggressive stance towards WTS teachings with the view of trying to reach JWs who may be a bit shaky in their WTS faith. In this blog post I look at 2 John 10 and discuss the practice of shunning.
Feedback and comments on the blog are much appreciated. And if you think this non-confrontational approach would be helpful to a friend or family member, please feel free to pass the link on or print out the posts to use as you see fit.

Here is a post I wrote last year about the issue:

The essential thing to understand about shunning in 2 John is that it pertains to the first-century AD social phenomenon of itinerant evangelism -- in which traveling teachers and apostles were basically homeless and destitute (reflecting the ethos and lifestyle promoted in Matthew 6:25-34, 8:19-22, 10:5-42, 23:34, Luke 10:5-15, 12:22-34). The people being shunned were not wayward or sinning members of the church itself; they were outsiders who had to be given lodging, food, and support (which is the meaning of "taking them into your house" in 2 John 10-11, cf. Matthew 10:12). The problem that arose is the case of those whose teaching was regarded as inimical to the central beliefs of the church (as in 2 John) or if they abused the privilege and stayed too long or asked for money (as in the Didache). The practice of shunning however cuts both ways and 3 John relates the author's reaction to his own emissaries being shunned by another church.
