Alpha and Omega and Alchemy

Am reading about the poet Rimbaud, and came across this:

"lessive" is the term used for the secret substance of the hermetic philosopher, so called because it is used to wash or purify the metals. It is also called AZOTH and that word is of great importance to alchemists, for it contains the first and last letters of the hebrew, greek, and latin languages. The alpha and omega of the greek language. It serves also as the monogram of hermetic truth, the perfect sign of the absolute. This "lessive" joined with fire is all the alchemist needs to begin the great work.

Does alchemy throw any light on the symbolism of Revelation? Pointers anybody?
