Lyrics and melody by Pearl Jam.

The music may not be for everyone, but I recognized myself in the lyrics.

You're always saying that there's something wrong
I'm starting to believe it's your plan all along

Death came around, forced to hear its song
And know tomorrow can't be depended on

I've seen the home inside your head
All locked doors and unmade beds
    Open sores unattended
Let me say just once that

I have faced it, a life wasted
    I'm never going back again

I escaped it, a life wasted
    I'm never going back again
    Having tasted, a life wasted
    I'm never going back again

The world awaits just up the stairs
Leave the pain for someone else
Nothing back there for you to find
Or was it you you left behind?

You're always saying you're too weak to be strong
You're harder on yourself than just about anyone

Why swim the channel just to get this far?
Halfway there, why would you turn around?

    Darkness comes in waves...tell me,
    Why invite it to stay?

    You're warm with negativity
    Yes, comfort is an energy
But why let the sad song play?

I have faced it, a life wasted
    I'm never going back again

Oh I escaped it, a life wasted
    I'm never going back again

    Having tasted, a life wasted
    I'm never going back again

Oh i erased it, a life wasted
    I'm never going back again

When I was a jw and in a very abusive marriage with a jw husband and a slave to the WTB&TS that insisted I remain married to a crazy man, this Madonna song was popular. The following words summed up how I was feeling about keeping the sick secrets of my husband and the cult to which I belonged all the while being very afraid of being killed by domestic violence:

“I have a tale to tell. Sometimes it gets so hard to hide it well, I was not ready for the fall, too blind to see the writing on the wall. A man can tell a thousand lies. I've learned my lesson well. Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned. Til then, it will burn inside of me.” And then later it says, “The truth is never far behind. You kept it hidden well. If I live to tell the secret I knew then, will I ever have the chance again? If I ran away, I'd never have the strength to go very far. How will they hear the beating of my heart? Will it grow cold, this secret that I hide? Will I grow old? How will they hear, when will they learn? How will they know?” It's called "Live to Tell." It still makes me cry.

I believe that the Filthful and Disgraceful Slavebugger itself is abusive and likes keeping people in marriages where the husband is abusive. And, it likes keeping people that would make good husbands (and by a good husband, I mean one that would not subject his wife to continual abuse and tyranny) from ever having a wife. Instead, they want me to replace sex drive with field circus drive.

Needless to say, it didn't work.

The message is certainly one ex-witnesses can relate to.

I take exeption with "a life wasted". There is no such thing. We learned and grew from our expereinces and now we have the rest of our life to enjoy. No regrets, just be happy.

Awakened, here's one that I identify with. Counting Crows "A Murder of One". They opened up for the Stones about 13 years ago, I had never heard of them. When they played that song, I about lost it. For me it was more about getting out of an abusive relationship. But isn't that kinda what we got out of when we exited the Witnesses?

    A Murder of One

    Blue morning, blue morning
Wrapped in strands of fist and bone
Curiosity, Kitten, doesn't have to mean you're on your own
You can look outside your window
    He doesn't have to know
    We can talk awhile, baby
We can take it nice and slow

All your life is such a shame, shame, shame
All your love is just a dream, dream, dream

Are you happy when you're sleeping?
Does he keep you safe and warm?
Does he tell you when you're sorry?
Does he tell you when you're wrong?
I've been watching you for hours
It's been years since we were born
We were perfect when we started
I've been wondering where we've gone

All your life is such a shame, shame, shame
All your love is just a dream, dream, dream

Well, I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow
Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there counting crows
    One for sorrow
    Two for joy
Three for girls and four for boys
    Five for silver
    Six for gold and
Seven for a secret never to be told

There's a bird that nests inside you
    Sleeping underneath your skin
When you open up your wings to speak
I wish you'd let me in

All your life is such a shame, shame, shame
All your love is just a dream, dream, dream

    Open up your eyes
You can see the flames of your wasted life
    You should be ashamed
You don't want to waste your life

    I walk along these hillsides
In the summer 'neath the sunshine
I am feathered by the moonlight falling down on me

    Change, change, change
