Not sure if this link works, but I found this original picture of the 1930 census which lists Rutherford living at Beth Sarim in San Diego with "servants" as household members. He is listing himself as a writer and editor, never having served in any military action. "His" property is listed as worth $85,000. Thats a boatload of money by 1930 standards!

I just love looking at these old documents. :) Wikipedia has an interesting take on his life as well.

And here is the original ships manifest when he took a BOAT, the Santa Lucia, from Los Angeles to New York in 1934. His address is listed as 124 Columbia Heights, NY

    From Wikipedia article: Death

About age 70, he went through several medical treatments for intestinal cancer. He went through more than one operation in 1941, but never fully recovered. He died in San Diego, California on January 8th, 1942 at the age of 72. His funeral was attended by four people, none of whom were related to him. The official coroner's records on file with the State of California state that he had been dead for several days before being discovered at the bottom of a stairwell. Death
