I believe if you focus on trying to understand the symbolic meaning of the "wilderness" that you will go a long way in harmonizing a modern fulfillment for BTG. Determine what the wilderness reference is.
By comparison, you have two other references of the wilderness, both associated with the woman who persecuted by Satan who is hidden there specifically by God.
Rev. 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days.
Rev 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
Whatever the "wilderness" is, it has to be consistent in connection with Babylon the Great. But please note, the woman's place in the wilderness is characterized as being away "from the face of the serpent" meaning the serptent has no direct access when the woman is hiding in the wilderness. Satan disgorges a river to drawn her, which is propaganda, but that still is not direct accesss. It just means the false propaganda in the world is there to drown her academically or doctrinally; like someone putting out the theory of evolution and showing all kinds of scientific information to back that up in contradiction to the Bible, etc.
In that specific regard, I don't see how BTG can be "false religion" in the sense of say the Catholic Church, since the Catholic Church is very much a public institution. The woman of God who gives birth to the messiah and BTG have that context in common: they both dwell in the "wilderness."
A second hint is that this woman rides the U.N. if one goes with the idea that the scarlet-colored wild beast is the U.N. So in that case, you have a direct influence and connection with the U.N. whomever BTG is. I don't see the Catholic Church in particular having this role.
My interpretation is that BTG primarily exists "behind the scenes" in secret societies and exerts her influence in that way. No problem confirming this with all the conspiracy theory web pages talking bout the CFR, Bilderbergers and others linked with "Babylon the Great" which indeed have direct influence now on the U.N.
There is plenty out there now focussing on the secret societies manipulating the U.N. Just go to YouTube and search "Illuminati" or "Babylon" and you will see what many are linking to BTG. What these secret societies have in common with the woman who flees into the wilderness is that the woman can be made up of secret societies as well, that are "away from the face of the dragon." Likewise, "God's people" can be linked with BTG because of Russell and his connections with Freemasonry, pyramidology and the "Illuminati."

In the early days, in fact, Russell didn't take up collections, bragging that he had some rich backers who provided him with money. They were Jewish-based organizations though, associated with secret societies.

So essentially Russell was financed by the Illuminati from the very beginning to create a religion that would have the Illuminati interests at heart, even if indirectly. Russell, of course, was Jewish himself.
So BTG as the secret socities behind the scenes manipulating the UN, like the CFR, Bilderbergers and others is a better explanation, to me, than simply "false religion" and it also has a connection with the WTS.

Now the secret societies and false religions of BTG do corrupt public religion and organized religion so they become part of BTG. That is who BTG actually is, and the WTS, in the end, is considered part of BTG.
