Explain it like I'm three...what's the big deal about being an ex-dub?

It’s just not that big of a deal. I hear people respond to stories of ex-witnesses and it reminds me how the Organization is viewed by those who have not been in it. Since Witnesses are not allowed to participate in any public activities that involve association with “Worldy People” (my program just put a red line under worldly, but the way) these people never get to know a Jehovah’s Witness. The closest they will ever get is maybe dating someone that was a witness, but even then they will never really understand.

What’s to understand, anyway? I mean look at the kids, they don’t celebrate any holidays. They don’t say the pledge of allegiance. They dress differently than all the other kids, and they do good schoolwork. Every year they bring the same little brochure with the bad artwork on it and remind us that they aren’t supposed to do a lot of stuff.

Then there’s the teenagers. They are different depending on who is around, but most of the time they say they aren’t going to college. Some of them come to school and change clothes and makeup as soon as they get there.

The adults are no problem, you’ll never see one and instantly know it or anything. Beyond that, the most you know of them is that they wake you up on Saturday.

    So…what’s the big deal?

Being an ex-dub was never a big deal to me for many years. In fact, I never considered myself ex-anything until my mom started shunning me. So the big deal for me is shunning.

I think it's a very serious situation where a group claims to be the only true path to salvation and makes you strictly adhere to that code or risk complete ostracization. Not to mention that interpretations of scripture literally put their members' lives on the line when it comes to certain medical procedures.

In addition to the sharing and healing on this "ex-dub" site, the most important thing about being an ex-dub is the opportunity to inform people about the dubs, so they don't get stuck in there (at least without having an excellent chance to hear the real deal).

Today a person being called on by the JW's learned enough from this site to decided not only to refuse the invitation to the kingdom Hall this Sunday, but also decided to tell them he's not interested.

    See the thread here: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/146700/1.ashx

Hurray for his chance to talk to ex-dubs!

Let me add a little. I would think a guy like Bryan with the story he had would be to the point we never see him. So many people have stories just like he does. Why doesn't the rest of the world flip out and raid records at halls all over the country where there are records of child abuse that has not been reported? It's there, in the files! But they can jump all over Britney Spears latest screw up.

    I just don't get it.
