the dalai lama said enlightenment doesn't come from happiness. I think about that whenever life really sucks.

enlightenment is not about being happy or being sad, its about understanding the causes and reasons behind either state of mind. if you are paining yourself, you will keep on doing it until you understand how and why...once you understand, then you can do something else, which may lead to something less painful...when you see how you cause pains by your own Belief System, then you can change your BS. --doc it hurts when I do this.... ..stop doing that!

I guess that's what the DL meant - we don't notice what we are doing when all goes well. When we are suffering, we look around for the reason, and maybe learn something.

Your first list was more accurate, but not enough for the mind. Your revised list is good, too; now, as long as mind doesn't get lost in it all will be fine. "Enlightenment" - a difficult concept for the mind to handle. Fortunately, you don't need the mind to experience it, because it is what you are beneath all appearances, beneath all mental activity - it is your natural state prior to the arising "idea of me", which only clouds the natural state. Be still and know.
