It is mentioned in the literature in connection with spiritism/demonism:

    *** g70 7/8 p. 21 I Was Once a Slave of the Demons ***

Well, that older man who appeared to preside was a witch doctor, and the men gathered around were fellow worshipers of the spirits of the dead. That large wooden bowl with its four short legs, all carved out of one piece, contained the kava that was being passed around. The roots and stems of the kava plant, related to the pepper family, are dried and ground to powder and then mixed with water. While the kava was being mixed, offerings were made to the spirits of the dead.

    *** yb84 p. 183 Fiji and Neighboring Islands ***

Seremaia Raibe became involved with demonism after he left school, joining a group known as the Vukea (Helper). This group believed they would be given power over death. He would take part in drinking kava (a native drink that numbs the mind and body) until the early hours of the morning in order to contact the demons and receive power to overcome death.
