I have been invited to a meetup in July. It will be my first and the first for ex-JWs in my area. Have you been to one? How are they structured? Any ideas about what I may experience?

Your thread looked so lonely, I just had to reply. But I can't help. I've never been to one.

I imagine it will feel weird at first, like a blind date.

Thank you jgnat. I agree weird. Three weeks away and I'm nervous already.

I think you will have a good time. So how many people are expected at this meetup?

By the way, I have not regretted any of the meetups I've had with posters here. It was still a little strange at first, not knowing the cadence of their speech, their mannerisms. It's like meeting an intimate stranger. Known but unknown.

There is a cap of 20 for space reasons. Six have confirmed so far. I dont know them personally because I have been out since 74. Two are in my area and would know my dad for sure.

I went to my first meet-up in April this year in NYC. It was at Dave & Busters in Times Square. Very informal, just a bunch of people meeting for drinks and food. I have trouble hearing when there is a lot of back ground noise and that place was very noisy. Other than that I had a good time and met a few JWD posters and some other people.

There's no reason to be nervous. Go and have fun.

I haven't been to a meet up yet, but I did meet someone from the board last weekend. Hubby and I went to their place for a bbq. It was a bit awkward at first, meeting someone you've only interacted with over the internet, especially for my hubby (he's never been on JWD etc), but we had a real fun time, and hope to get together again in the next few weeks.

You are aware that most of those people who are there will be apostates, don't you?

They are some of the best friends I have.

Enjoy yourself and have a good time with the real friends.

We ususally had ours at a coffee shop or restaurant. You would think the discussion would be solely JW based, but it really isn't. It is just like meeting up with coworkers or extended family for lunch. I really enjoyed them.
