The Betty Foley Memorial Award: Gerso Quintana of Secaucus. This district manager of customer operations at PSE&G voluntarily opens his heart and the company's customer service centers in Bayonne, Hoboken, Jersey City and Union City to those in need, collecting food, coats, toys, books and donations for worthy causes. He also mentors fellow Hispanics in the company who seek management positions, as well as members of the congregation of the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in West New York, where he serves as an elder.

Wonder how long he will stay an elder when they find out he is involved in worldly charities?
The Betty Foley Memorial Award. The award will recognize those who best exemplify the giving spirit of late Jersey Journal staffer Betty Foley, who covered religion and news for the paper and coordinated the Hudson County Spelling Bee and Science Fair. In her personal life, Foley was committed to volunteer service with her church, the College Community Orchestra and the YMCA of Jersey City.

Don't miss more profiles this week on all of the 2007 heroes.

Tomorrow Building Brighter Futures: Colleen Hitchell of Bayonne. A volunteer with Hudson County's CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), the executive assistant at AIG in Manhattan devotes countless hours to shepherding adoptions through the system for children whose cases have become mired in red tape. In just one year, Hitchell's dogged determination has resulted in happy endings for six newly adopted children and their families.

The Mike Rowan Award: Cultivating Tomorrow's Leaders Through Athletics: Joseph Maione of Hoboken. Coach of the hockey team at St. Peter's Preparatory School in Jersey City, Maione survived a devastating double stroke two years ago, at age 33. Given just a 50-50 chance of survival, he overcame the odds, demonstrating determination and courage in his recovery to return to coaching and inspire his young players.

Community Service: Carol Harrison-Arnold of Jersey City. An attorney who runs her own consulting firm, Harrison-Arnold has donated her time and expertise to be a driving force behind the revitalization of Astor Place and Monticello Avenue. She is also vice president of the Lincoln High School Parents Council, giving freely of her energy although she has no children attending the school.

Newspapers in Education: Christina Polychronis of Jersey City. A Jersey City public school teacher for more than 30 years, Polychronis uses The Jersey Journal and other newspapers in her Snyder High School classroom to stimulate the creativity of her students and inspire fellow teachers. She is also active in many community service projects at the Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church of Jersey City.

Recap: Yesterday we profiled Christopher Hidrovo, 17, of East Newark. He shares the Teen Hero award with Mariel Teschlog. A senior at Harrison High School, Christopher competes on the football, basketball and baseball teams. Christopher also finds the time to raise funds for service projects spearheaded by the Harrison Lions Club and has volunteered to work with special needs kids at a residential summer camp.
