Police yesterday were searching for the person who fatally shot an 18-year-old Yeadon man and wounded his 17-year-old brother in the parking lot of a Northeast Philadelphia skating rink Sunday night.

Devon Jacobs, a recent graduate of Penn Wood High School in Lansdowne, was killed after what police said was a spat over a girl. His younger brother, Quenton Jacobs, 17, was also shot once in the leg but was treated at Frankford Hospital-Torresdale Campus and released.

The victim's father, Albert Jacobs, 41, said yesterday that Devon Jacobs' friends told him his son was mediating the argument in the Palace Roller Skating Center in the 11500 block of Roosevelt Boulevard in the Far Northeast.

"They were just going for a good time," Albert Jacobs said. "It's terrible."

Devon Jacobs, two of his brothers, and a group of friends had planned the outing after a Sunday morning meeting of their congregation at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Southwest Philadelphia.

They spent that afternoon preaching door to door, then headed to the rink later that night, Albert Jacobs said.

The skating center's owner, Ted Rendfrey, said security guards saw a confrontation between two groups of teenagers just after 9 p.m. and were heading toward the group when they heard gunshots.

Two cars then took off, Rendfrey said.

The victim's 20-year-old brother, also named Albert, put him in his car and headed for a hospital. But police stopped the vehicle in the 9200 block of Roosevelt Boulevard and pronounced Devon Jacobs dead of gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.

Devon Jacobs was attending technical school in Northeast Philadelphia to study refrigeration, heating and air-conditioning systems, his father said. He enjoyed playing basketball.

"He had a pleasant personality," Albert Jacobs said. "He had a strong spirituality."
