I've been through three or four sets of progressive lenses over the past decade or so. They can be a pain. I had to have Lensecrafters remake every set I've gotten and then it takes me a couple of weeks to get used to them. All that aside, I would not be without them.
I remember the first set I got. I didn't realize how bad my near vision had gotten until I looked at my watch and realized for the first time that there was a date window on it. :)
What are these progressive or bifocal lenses and why use them instead of the usual lenses for correcting short or longsightedness? And why is it so difficult to get them right?
I have no problems with mine. I'm nearsighted in my left eye and farsighted in my right eye. The progressive lenses help my eyes to adjust from reading, seeing near and seeing far.Not everyone can be fitted for progressives.

What are these progressive or bifocal lenses and why use them instead of the usual lenses for correcting short or longsightedness?
Bifocal lens have a small arch at the bottom of the lens or the bottom half of the frame. The arch or the line across the lens is visable. It is specifically made for reading close up. The rest of the lens can be regular glass (if your distance is OK) or they can be corrective lens if you need some modification for regular of distance vision. Progressive lens have the corrective lens arranged in a gradual "progression" from reading at the bottom to regular or even corrective lens at the top. There is no noticable line. Some people (like me) need both close-up and distance correction. A progressive lens can do do close, medium and distance.
And why is it so difficult to get them right?
The progressive lens is difficult to get right especially if the glass and frame are small. The smaller the over-all lens then the smaller area on the lens to use for each type of viewing. And the larger the frame and lens then the greater area can be used for each type of correction required. Right now the fashion is for small frames and lens. Few retailers of glasses will explain this to you. And even if they do few people realize the vast difference it cam make. My first pair of progressives were large (that was the fashion at the time) My next set were smaller and took a bit longer to get used to because my eye had a smaller area to use for the various distances. Now I use my second set of frames and just get the lens changed. I've never been a fashion maven so I use works for me.
I got new ones too......
everyone can see my eyes better........best dollar I ever spent. How do you like them?
