Did not the witnesses at one time or over a period of time in their publications write articles that referred to the build up of nations in armaments etc that could lead to war. Any information on this or just where I can find it in the reprints would be greatly appreciated.

Prior to 1914 the WT reckoned that 1914 would be the 'end of the Time of Trouble, not the beginning.

Google around and I am sure you will find the references.

    Cheers

The WTBTS claims the years before 1914 were quiet and war came unexpected:

German newsmagazine Der Spiegel reports that prior to 1914, people "believed in a golden future with more freedom, progress, and prosperity." Then everything changed. "The war that began in August 1914 and came to an end in November 1918 was a dramatic event. It made a historic break, separating the old from the new," states the magazine GEO.

From the human standpoint, the world troubles and global wars foretold in the Bible were far from the thinking of the pre-1914 world. German statesman Konrad Adenauer said: "Thoughts and pictures come to my mind, . . . thoughts from the years before 1914 when there was real peace, quiet and security on this earth—a time when we didn’t know fear. . . . Security and quiet have disappeared from the lives of men since 1914."25 People living before 1914 thought that the future "would get better and better," reported British statesman Harold Macmillan.26 The book 1913: America Between Two Worlds notes: "Secretary of State Bryan said [in 1913] that ‘conditions promising world peace were never more favorable than now.’"27

    “One Morning in 1914”
“Suddenly, unexpectedly, one morning in 1914 the whole thing came to an end,” declared Britain’s former prime minister Harold Macmillan in a speech at Yale University. He said that the great war that began in 1914 marked the end of “100 years of peace and progress” and signaled “the end of an era.” Before that the world seemed to be in an age of “automatic progress,” where “everything would get better and better,” said the 86-year-old statesman. “This was the world I was born in.”

    *** kc chap. 13 p. 120 par. 8 The Kingdom Horseman Rides ***
Was 1914 the year when the rider of the “fiery-colored horse” took peace away from the earth? Many historians support that view. For example, almost 50 years afterward, the editor of the historical magazine American Heritage wrote: “In the summer of 1914 the nations were at peace and the future seemed serene. Then the guns spoke, and things would never again be the same. . . . The year 1914 was one of the most fateful years in human history . . . In that year there came one of those profound turning points that occur no more than once or twice in a millennium. Probably it will be a long time before we fully understand what 1914 got us into, but we can at least begin to see what it wrenched us out of.” Truly, the rider of the “fiery-colored horse” wrenched peace from the earth, and 1914 was the year.
