If you have seen the History Channels program on Exodus and the plagues, You will see that they have a logical, scientific explanation for The Nile turning to blood. (red)

They used this to compare what happened in the Nile River

    Lake Nyos, Cameroon 1986 Disaster

    The 1986 disaster

A cow suffocated by gases from Lake Nyos

Although a sudden outgassing of CO 2 had occurred at Lake Monoun in 1984, killing 37 local residents, a similar threat from Lake Nyos was not anticipated. However, on August 21, 1986, a limnic eruption occurred at Lake Nyos which triggered the sudden release of about 1.6 million tonnes of CO 2 . The gas rushed down two nearby valleys, displacing all the air and suffocating up to 1,800 people within 20 km of the lake, mostly rural villagers, as well as 3,500 livestock. About 4,000 inhabitants fled the area, and many of these developed respiratory problems, burns, and paralysis as a result of the gases.

It is not known what triggered the catastrophic outgassing. Most geologists suspect a landslide, but some believe that a small volcanic eruption may have occurred on the bed of the lake. A third possibility is that cool rainwater falling on one side of the lake triggered the overturn. Whatever the cause, the event resulted in the rapid mixing of the supersaturated deep water with the upper layers of the lake, where the reduced pressure allowed the stored CO 2 to effervesce out of solution.

It is believed that up to a cubic kilometre of gas was released. Because CO 2 is denser than air, the gas flowed off the mountainous flank in which Lake Nyos rests and down two adjoining valleys in a layer tens of metres deep, displacing the air and suffocating all the people and animals before it could dissipate. The normally blue waters of the lake turned a deep red after the outgassing, due to iron-rich water from the deep rising to the surface and being oxidised by the air. The level of the lake dropped by about a metre, representing the volume of gas re The 1986 disaster

Here is the scriptures from Exodus

    17

This is what Jehovah has said: "By this you will know that I am Jehovah. Here I am striking with the rod that is in my hand upon the water that is in the Nile River, and it will certainly turn into blood. 18 And the fish that are in the Nile River will die, and the Nile River will actually stink, and the Egyptians will simply have no stomach for drinking water from the Nile River."’"

    19

Subsequently Jehovah said to Moses: "Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and stretch your hand out over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their Nile canals and over their reedy pools and over all their impounded waters, that they may become blood.’ And there will certainly be blood in all the land of Egypt and in the wooden vessels and in the stone vessels." 20 Immediately Moses and Aaron did so, just as Jehovah had commanded, and he lifted up the rod and struck the water that was in the Nile River under the eyes of Phar´aoh and his servants, and all the water that was in the Nile River was turned into blood. 21And the fish that were in the Nile River died, and the Nile River began to stink; and the Egyptians were unable to drink water from the Nile River; and the blood came to be in all the land of Egypt.

CAMEROON: Volcanic activity around Lake Nyos

A team of experts from the Mines, Water and Power Resources Ministry left the capital, Yaounde, on Friday for Lake Nyos to investigate reports of volcanic activity there, Reuters reported on Monday.

Reports from Bamenda in Northwest Province, some 70 km south of Lake Nyos, indicated rumblings at the lake on 2 August and an explosion the following day while farmers and fishers in the area said there are dead fish floating in the lake, according to Reuters.

In 1986 some 1,800 villagers died after inhaling toxic fumes which bubbled up from the depths of the lake and asphyxiated those living nearby. The lake is on the same geological fault line as Mount Cameroon which erupted in March this year destroying about 100 buildings and making around 20 families homeless.

I saw this show some time ago, but it was on again tonight. I find that it is easy to say God did something after the fact. I have always felt that unexplained things happened in bible times.....and the only explanation is that it came from God.

Given this information.....something logical why water would turn red, and if God did say that Plague 1 was to turn water into blood.

I just can't help but think that maybe God does not know the difference between blood and sulphur.

Did anyone see that show and what do you think?

    Thanks in advance.

I was also thinking of the scripture........abstain from blood.

When does blood really mean blood and when does blood mean I am gonna turn the river red.

    Hi purps:

I did see that particular episode. It was amazing. Previous to watching this, I had no knowledge of the 1986 incident.

A particular detail that fascinated me was how the episode explained the deaths due to toxic gas. One of the things that the 1986 deaths and the deaths in the book of Exodus had in common was their proximity to the ground.

In ancient Egypt, the first born son slept on a low-set bed (which rested directly on the floor) while the rest of the family slept on the second level. This could have likely explained why only the first born sons died from the toxic gasses - just as those who slept close to the ground did in the 1986 incident.

It sounds like you saw the Exodus Decoded program by Simcha Jacobovici which is pure unmitigated rubbish (checking my TV schedule, aha! it's on tonight on the History Channel). Like most of his other speculations on the program, this one doesn't wash....the flowing Nile River is geologically nothing like the sulphurous lakes in Cameroon, where the CO 2 gasses can get trapped and build up. Unfortunately, the Israelite exodus was described as occurring in Egypt, not in a volcanically active rift valley in Cameroon.

Viewer beware in a program like this, where speculation runs rampant with disregard to actual facts....

I watched the episode with deep interest. Though they may be wrong about some of the speculations they have made - they did have ample evidence to move the Exodus to the dates they suggest that coincided with the major volcano and so forth.

Very interesting. One of the best explanations I have seen.

    I watched the show....

    Arthur~

The point that was made on the show about the 1st born of all Egypt being killed because of where they slept doesn't hold water. The biblical account also says that the 1st born of all the beasts also were killed (Ex. 12:29).....they didn't seem to explain just how that happened . GYMBB

What did you think about the explanation for any of the other plagues?

    just curious
