Witnesses win European Court lawsuit against Russian officials

    It sounds like an open and shut case. Some local officials, acting with no legal authority, broke up a Witness meeting and then cancelled the lease for their meeting place. The Russian judicial system refused to do anything to correct the situation, so the Witnesses appealed to the European Court of Human Rights. The Witnesses were awarded EUR 30,000 in damages, and EUR 60,544 in costs.

    That really sucks . I actually thought Russia was taking a stand on cults and it seemed they were till now .

    This is a very good (or bad) example of how hasty "anticult" action ends up reinforcing the legal status of "cults".

    As one French humorist put it: "first, shoot; second, aim; third, think".
