Does the bible contradict itself?...

I was watching a interesting documentary on the Ark of the Covenant this weekend and had an interesting thought.

When Moses went up on the mountain to get the 10 commandment the Iseralites got tired of waiting and made a golden calf to worship. When Moses got back and saw this he was outraged and had allot of them killed because of this.

Now consider this. After receiving the 10 commandments (which forbid idol worship) they build a box, cover it with gold, put 2 statues of angels on the lid, and place the 10 commandments inside. They assign it supernatural powers (don't touch it or you will die ) and also carry it into battle with them. Later they build a temple and place it in the Holy of Holys and only allow one person to enter that room. Now if that's not idol worship, what is?

So why does God forbid idol worship but then encourages his people to do just that?

What are some other contradictions you have found in the bible?

Who is the father of Joseph?

MAT 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

LUK 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli.

The number of beasts in the ark

GEN 7:2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

GEN 7:8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth, GEN 7:9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

While I admire it as a time-honored example of religious literature, a reasonable person would have to admit this:

It is in fact quite self-contradictory. Both in matters of historical fact, and also in basic religious law & ethics. Check out how difficult it is to reconcile the four gospels, just as an example. (And how hard the bible literalists like the WTS have to work to explain away the differences!)

It is also quite fanciful in many instances - as much so as the early Greek poets as a matter of fact.
