I found this interesting comment in the second last post of a 1975 thread by person calling himself "trekkie".

In our association, peer pressure is almost always a result of the Society's teaching. Any peer pressure that the F&DS does not approve of will quickly be addressed in our publications and stopped. Equally, any peer pressure that continues for some time has at least the tacit approval of the Society.

The WTBS is often the "unseen hand" in a lot of things. Something will be said at a convention, or implied in CO's talk that supposedly came directly from the Society.

Pretty soon it will become Gospel as if it was handed down by JC himself. If the idea doesn't work out, the WTBS can state that nothing in writing pin the blame on them. The friends are accused of running ahead of Jehovah.
