I made a proposition to my dad - the ex-elder

My dad is visiting us this month...so we get to talking
Every chance I get I drop a "little" bomb about the WTS - nothing big to cause an argument but powerful enough to make him think and not have an answer.

Anyway, he is the ultimate "pack rat". He won't ever throw anything away. Therefore there is an entire closet in my parents' house exclusively for WT literature. I mean he has EVERYTHING! He has books from the Russell era! He's 70 and has been a witness for 45. So early in his JW career he got some interesting "classics".

We were joking around and I told him that he needed to go to "Pack Rats Anonymous" and ask him: "Do you still have the "book closet"? He says "Of course!" I'm telling him get rid of that stuff, you can have everything on disc, and open some useful space in the house. That is when he mentions the Russell books.
So I go and tell him there are book collectors that would pay good $$ for those. Surprisingly, he seems open to the idea. So I tell him to send me a list of the titles and I'll post them on Ebay. He says he'll do it. We'll see.

But to me it's incredible that he would even consider it!!! I'll let you know what turns out...

There's a few that are more valuable than others. The "apology" for 1975, for instance, or the "edited" bound volume. If he were to have the "edited" bound volume "in our day" along with the magazine, "be completed in our 20th Century", January 1, 1989, bonus!

The reason why I don't get them is that it would drive me insane to have those boxes and boxes of books around the house. Growing up with a "pack rat", I'm the ultimate minimalist.

The real reason behind the suggestion is not so much the money issue, that is what I told him. But the fact that I know that some people are looking for some of these books to find the fiascos some of them have been, the innacuracies, etc.

The "apology" for 1975, for instance,

Where can we find that, Jgnat? What does it say?

Here it is. I googled it. http://members.aol.com/beyondjw/1975.htm

The Society did candidly acknowledge some responsibility for the hopes it raised by its 1975 speculations, but it was not for general public consumption. The 1980 Yearbook, on pages 30-31, spoke of a talk given at the 1979 conventions, called by the title of the above Watchtower article, "Choosing the Best Way of Life." The talk

acknowledged the Society's responsibility for some of the disappointment a number felt regarding 1975.

If he has a 1934 Yearbook, get him to put it on Ebay.

He will be gobsmacked when he sees how much it sells for and will want to know why.

Get him to read the first declaration from Germany before he puts it in the post.

Personally, I would not encourage any family member to get rid of old WT litterature until I had got them out.

    Cheers

    Chris
