The post by Mr. Steinhaug on the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Holocaust contains an old argument that scholars already debunked several years ago. In English sources, I found some good material in the book, "Persecution and Resistance of Jehovah's Witnesses During the Nazi-Regime, 1933-1945," edited by Hans Hesse. A number of scholars have discussed the Berlin 1933 convention mentioned by Mr. Steinhaug. For instance, historian Sybil Milton, religious scientist Gabriele Yonan, noted German church historian Gerhard Besier, and religious historian Christine King all analyze the response of the Jehovah's Witnesses both in the early and later years of National Socialist control. They come to a very different conclusion than Mr. Steinhaug or Mr. Penton, whose writing seems to be an emotional polemic more than an academic historical treatment. In fact, Professor Besier shows that much of the material that Penton repeats was actually recycled propaganda generated by the Stasi (East German Police) to discredit leaders among the Witness movement. If he is a scholar, Mr. Penton should be more careful of his sources.

"I named four recognized academics whose works and credentials are accessible for review. I have no interest in engaging in a debate on this subject. You are free to conduct an objective review of the current scholarship and draw your own conclusions. My evaluation of the Penton article is that it is academically irresponsible. If you have a different opinion, that is your right. At the very least, readers of this sort of polemic ought to be aware that the writer has not properly interrogated the sources, or if he has, he has not informed the reader fairly. Contextualization and authentication of sources is basic historical methodology that any undergraduate should know."

    MacHislopp,
The Declaration, written by Rutherford and published in the 1934 Yearbook, speaks for itself. Nobody questions the courage and integrity of the rank-and-file JWs in Germany during the Nazi era. Nor can anyone, thanks to the clarity of his statement in the above-referenced yearbook, gainsay Rutherford's bid to mollify Hitler by pandering to his anti-Semitism and anti-Anglo-Americanism.

    Hello Room 215,

thanks for the reply. I know about

the yearbook and its contents! It is beyond comprehension

to debate, to modify the things written in it by the WTS

    itself.
