Googling, I see there are hundreds of sites where you can text worldwide free...
Here's one I found. I have not used it so no gaurantee expressly or by implication.

Hold on... surely the important thing is where the phone is based rather than the web site? So can the one for North America be used from where you are. I can't see how where the sender is, is important.
