JWs Are Becoming More Like Catholics Everyday!

Remember encountering Catholics out in field service?

Remember how puzzled you felt about how people could identify themselves as "Catholic" - but still practise birth control,

think that priests should get married, and believe or do whatever they want , as long as they attend a mass occasionally?

Remember how strange it seemed that these people would revere the Pope - but flatly disregard whatever he said?

Remember how you couldn't pry them away from the Catholic church in spite of the above? Remember how Catholic scandals

    didn't affect them?

    Well, welcome to Jehovah's Witnesses!

It's all going in the same direction. People are calling themselves "Witnesses" while avoiding the meetings, recommending

college, watching internet porn, secretly taking blood when needed, abusing alcohol and prescription pills, and not bothering to

read the latest 'cut n' paste' magazines. Of course, they still speak reverently of the "anointed" or "faithful slave" - and they

don't celebrate the holidays ( at least not outwardly) well, hey! you've gotta have limits!

Don't believe this "6.4 million Witnesses" crap. If this statistic really represents something healthy, why do contributions

keep falling behind expenses? and why is there such a growing gap between publishers and baptisms in countless

countries? (think: a baptism is openly observed and counted - but counting time as a publisher is a private claim - does that

    give you any thoughts?)

I'd say the Catholics are in better shape since they maintain an infrastructure to support their faith - while the Watchtower

selfishly tears down what little infrastructure they've had.

The above was driven home to me this weekend when I spoke with an elder's wife , who strongly recommended a college education

    for young people!

Excellent point. I, too, have witnessed the "catholicization" of JWs in recent years. My thinking is it stems from 1995 and the abandonment of the "generation" teaching, which I predict will go down in history as the beginning of the end of dubdom's golden age.

I agree. Today's JW, more than at any time in the past, does what he/she does because, well, that's just what JW's do!

A good example is the higher ed flip flop and dub reaction to it. Despite the society's new hard line on college, a lot of dub kids are already going to college. I doubt there will be mass withdrawals.

Not long ago, before we bailed out, we had dinner at the home of a Min. Svt. and his wife, both third generation dubs, the offspring of prominent elders; you know, the kind of JWs who are often pointed to as "fine examples" for the rest of the flock to imitate. They had recenty given birth to a son and the proud grandparents had opened a college fund at a local bank! That grandfather is a long time elder and a real "by the book" company man. Go figure.

Interesting observations.... I think you are pretty accurate too. I see more and more not taking the meetings seriously, myself included. They are boring and a waste of time, I dont feel guilty anymore not going instead I just go again because I am not ready to be labeled "spiritually weak" yet and deleted from serving. Soon though.... I dont know how long I can keep up the charade.

I agree, and add that there is a "ritualizing" going on with JWs. The ritual of:

    • Field service: no results from an outmoded system, but still continue in act as proof of dedication
    • Meetings: endless repetition (mass?) and rote comments
    • Prayer: Canned styles lack specifics and feeling (might as well be 'Our Father's' and 'Hail Mary's' if you ask me)
    • Memorial: JW-style Easter where 10 million extra show up (the DF, inactive, unbaptised, etc.)

It is these very rituals that get you acceptance as a JW. "White-washed grave" mentality?
