Hmmmm, I wonder if they thought the end was near in 1960? Yes, the answer is yes; they did think the end was near. Bwahahahaha.

Not to be dismissed from consideration as "fearful sights" and "great signs" from heaven are new things that modern science is discovering and bringing to the people’s attention, to their own and the people’s mental agitation and rising fears. The so-called cosmic rays are more and more commanding scientific study. Only as far back as 1911 scientific experiments on the absorbing of penetrating gamma rays from radium in the air led a Dr. V. F. Hess to suspect that not all the ionization in air was due to this alone. Experiments later with balloons developed the right conclusion, that there was some extremely powerful radiation coming from above; there were cosmic rays. With the speed of light the cosmic rays are carried along through earth’s atmosphere and finally hit the earth with still enough energy to penetrate and be measurable to a depth of two hundred feet underground. Cosmic rays reach an energy of many billions of electron volts. The sun of our solar system plays its part in these cosmic rays.

It has been observed that there has been an intensifying of cosmic ray showers during what appear to be patches of something on the face of the sun. What? Patches of darkness, to us. Sunspots, we call them. They are in actuality great flares of energy on the surface of the sun. In December, 1957, during the International Geophysical Year, it was reported that "in recent months" the sun had co-operated with the scientific studies being made. How? By "displaying what is regarded here as the greatest number of flares in its recorded history. . . . In recent months the sun has been at the peak of its eleven-year sunspot cycle. This has produced an unusual number of flares. These are thought to spray out particles, which strike the earth’s atmosphere a day or two later and cause magnetic storms and other phenomena." The sunspot activity was reported as having "disrupted radio and television waves." Studies have shown that, accompanying a solar flare, there is a sudden increase of cosmic radiation and radio fade-outs. About a day after the appearance of the flare a magnetic storm is felt all over the world. During the period of greatest cosmic ray intensity some areas of the earth are almost completely blacked out with respect to radio communication. Lead-encased cables for communication and for transmitting power have also been burned completely through, and unexposed X-ray film has been rendered useless.

    24

What is the source of these cosmic rays? Not the stars. It has been scientifically established that the total energy carried by all cosmic ray particles is much more than all the energy ever emitted by stars. Cosmic rays seem to come from all directions with such great energies that scientists have not arrived at any satisfying explanation of their origin. Those of highest energy evidently come from beyond our Milky Way.

    25

Studies have been made of the effect of cosmic rays on living cells in animal bodies, particularly with respect to disorders of the mind. What effect do they have or will they have on the way men behave here on earth? Certainly the Creator of cosmic rays, Jehovah God, could use these to affect the minds of his enemies, including the king of the north and the king of the south, and could drive them to mutual slaughter: "every man’s sword shall be against his brother." (Ezek. 38:21, AS) In this prophecy God warns that he will also use other natural forces that are at his disposal, possibly a rain of antimatter that has the property of annihilating any material thing that it meets. He warns all scoffers that he will do an ‘unusual work.’—Isa. 28:21.

Wow! I had no idea Hollywood producer Ed Wood used to write for the WT.

I remember reading that in the Your Will Be Done On Earth book; surprised nobody has mentioned it in a thread before

I really dig Watchtower science - remember, these people were teaching at this same time that "the great water canopy" PROTECTED mankind from the cosmic rays before the flood and that is why the men of old could live so long.

But, they still lived to like 300 or more for a while after the flood, so maybe it took a while for the rays to build up. LOL.

Notice that they quote above that the rays go down in the earth hundreds of feet (which is scientifically true). How did water vapor clouds in the air stop them? Do you still need sunscreen on the most cloudy day? May I suggest they look into the possibility that earth's magnetic field and ozone layer provide the real protections from excess radiation?

Wake up, these rays do come from the stars. They seem to have sunspots mixed up with this, but Sol is a star too. They hit from all over, not just the direction of the sun, although obviously the sun is closer and more intense. Some can go clean through the earth and out the other side (neutrinos). This is why the neutrino expirements are buried deep in abandoned mines - to filter out the less penetrating types of cosmic rays.

There have been recorded solar flareups back over 200 years. The sunspot cycle has long existed at about an 11 year half cycle and a 22 year full cycle (with reversed magnetic fields at the half cycle). The IGY year was partly timed to one of these cycles.

How did god use this "cosmic shotgun" to get just the leaders of the north and the south - and not for example the governing body? I guess they are going to say next that the mystery rays drove Yeltsin to drink and gave Reagan altzhiemers - thus the fall of the Berlin wall. Wait, wasn't the other side supposed to win?

Yes. I was looking for KOTN information and stumbled upon this and couldn't stop laughing. Then it hit me - I used to believe this crap! Then I couldn't stop crying. Well, not really but metaphorically.

I have a lot of "Popular" or "Laymans" science reference books. This is a favorite hobby of mine. One good one is an encyclopedia of particle physics by John Gribbin - {Q is for Quantum}. He has a Ph.D. in astophysics and is Fellow of Astronomy at the University of Sussex in England.

Here's a comment on Cosmic Rays that mentions Victor Hess: (edited for length)

Cosmic Rays are "energetic particles from space" - these are Primary cosmic rays. When they hit the atmosphere, the produce showers of secondary cosmic rays, which hit the earth with a few primary cosmic rays. Named by Robert Millikan. Early scientists (before particle accelerators) would trek way up to the highest mountains to use them for experimnts, or send up unmanned balloons. This is because the primary rays are mostly gone when they get to the surface. A few can penetrate down several hundred feet.

In 1911 and 1912 the Austrian scientist Victor Hess made manned balloon flights which showed that the intensity of this radiation was five times greater at altitude 5,000 meters than at the surface. Studies really took off in the 20's with improved instruments such as the Geiger counter.

// NOTE - no mention of panic among these scientists or danger of "brain damage" ?? //

I have only two or three references here at work, but at home is one which deals with the IGY. I really think that this being WT hyped as the largest sunspot cycle in the history of the world is typical hyperbola to induce panic. Something makes me recall that a greater flareup was recorded by early astronomers a century or two before that. We also had a pretty big one in the last few years. Typical WT to use a little real and very interesting science to cook up end of the world panic.

A hahahhahahahahaha! Oh my GOD! Ha ha ha! And of course, references to scriptures, to back it up. Oh yes, with scriptural references, it has to be truuuue. Oh dear oh dear. This is something my mom would have used as proof in "informal witnessing", by the way...believing it fully. Scientific facts. God, I`m having bad flashbacks here.

Oh oh oh, my stomach hurts now...
