    Memorial placed for shooting victim

By: Scott Fitzgerald, Staff Writer August 28, 2001

(Pst, Kismet - Scott Fitzgerald isn't me, and if you don't agree to his story, please contact the newspaper)

A cross mounted on the east wall of Mac's Mart convenience store on Monday serves as a reminder both present and future of the late Jonathan Anderson.

"We remember what happened here and for those who witnessed this to come forward. There were too many people here to not see what happened," said Anthony Decker.

Decker, a close friend of the Anderson family, led nine people in prayer during a presentation and mounting of the cross with permission of the store at 221 E. Garriott.

Jonathan Anderson, 21, died from a single gunshot wound to the head Aug. 1 during what is believed to have been a crossfire between two opposing factions on the store's parking lot.

Police are continuing their investigation. No arrests have been made. Police and family members have requested people who saw what happened to come forward and give statements.

Decker, a Jehovah's Witness, read from scripture during Monday's service. He worked with the Anderson family members to get the cross made at Don's Custom Carpentry. He also got a high ladder and mounted it on Monday. His son, Issac, was the graphic artist for Jonathan Anderson's first rap CD.

Reading from a personally written oration titled "Friends," Decker said Monday's gathering at the cross was "to put Christianity's symbol of Christ's memorial in the remembrance of Jonathan Anderson ... I'm here to give hope and the assurance of Jehovah that soon his kingdom will come and he assures us through his son, evil doers and wickedness would be no more."

Jonathan Anderson's father, Ron, led those who attended the presentation and mounting of the cross in The Lord's Prayer.

I noticed that too! Why on earth are they allowing a JW to be remembered by means of a cross??
