A critical Windows flaw has been found and Microsoft are not releasing a fix until Jan 10th.

In the meantime, you can still protect yourself: Read WMF FAQ .

Read also Microsoft Security Advisory (912840).

I got hit by this a week or so ago, when hunting for free online games for some recreation over Xmas Ballistic informs me that it can also be found on Porn sites. Beware, boys!

I had to install "Webroot Spy Sweeper" to get rid of the payload, which incidentally was a faux Spyware Scanner

In an indication of how seriously they view this vulnerability, Microsoft have now released their own fix for this problem, in spite of originally saying they weren't going to release it until 10 January.

    • If you previously installed Ilfak Guilfanov's unofficial fix, it can be uninstalled from Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.
    • If you previously de=registered the shimgvw.dll file, it can be re-registered by going to Start | Run, and running:

    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

Microsoft's No-Charge support phone number for virus and other security-related issue support is 1-866-727-2338 , and is available 24 hours a day for the U.S. and Canada. For other countries, see http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=4 .
