From at least the 1940s to the 1960s the illustrations of
both Adam and Jesus in the Watchtower publications showed
them to be beardless!
Was it Rutherford and his dislike of Russell's beard that was
responsible for this teaching?
It would be nice to know a print reference where this belief
is stated.

I too noticed that in the earlier publications that it was Rutherford who removed Jesus' beard starting in the 1930's and grew it back around 1968 in the Watchtower articles. The publications in the 1920's depicted Jesus not only with his beard but also a halo.As a side note in the 1928 publication-Government on page 197 Satan is depicted with horns and a tail.
