The U.S. senate appears to be interested in reviewing Federal tax treatment of charitable contributions according to Report - Present Law and Background Relating to the Federal Tax Treatment of Charitable Contributions (http://www.jct.gov/publications.html?func=startdown&id=4371). I encourage everyone to read the aforementioned information and write to their U.S. representatives and committee members of the Joint Committee on Taxation (http://www.jct.gov/) and the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (http://www.deficitreduction.gov/public/) about ways to prevent dangerous cults from benefiting from government tax-exempt status. I am sending correspondences to U.S. senators and representatives and will post my letter on this forum by 10/30/11 asking them to enact legislation that would prevent the WTBTS, Unification Church, and other dangerous cults from qualifying as charitable organizations.

Excerpt from Joint Committee on Taxation Report-

Charitable giving by individuals, foundations, estates, and corporations reached $290.89 billion in 2010, of which individuals gave $211.77 billion (approximately two percent of their disposable personal income),3 foundations gave $41.00 billion,4 estates gave $22.83 billion, and corporations gave $15.29 billion.5 These figures represent estimates of the total amount of donations made to charity during 2010. As discussed in Part I, below, not all such donations are deductible for Federal income tax purposes. For data concerning tax-deductible charitable contributions, see Part II, below.

Figure 1, below, shows the recipients of the $290.89 billion of total 2010 charitable giving, by amount received and percentage of the total. The category receiving the largest share of donations in 2010 was religious organizations, which received more than one-third of all charitable donations. Educational institutions were the next largest category, receiving . . .

Sounds good. But the WTS would only move their headquarters to Canada or somewhere else.

Yeah!!! This is what I am talking about ... we need to write to the Senate and I mean it Let's do it ... and bring to their attentions the so called "charitable organizations" like Watchtower, Harold Camping and others that truly amass lots of money without any benefit to the general public ... spreading HATE SPEECH, making profit out of FALSE PROPHESIES, desintegrating families, covering up sexual abuse with the 2-witness rule, etc., and many religious "charitable"organizations are profiting in a way that it was not intended by the law ...

Do not downplay the power of the word it is stronger than a cannon ball !!!

I worked for the Senate. If anyone has a Senator or Representative on one of these committees, it is a special blessing. Your letter will mean so much more to them. The Witnesses could not sustain themselves if the charitable org. tax rules changed to their detriment. The federal and state governments can never directly target a religion but there is leeway in neutral tax regs. or statutes. Churches don't have to be treated favorably under the Const'n. Neutral taxation could hurt them badly.
