Remember reading that Simon gave the ^space above^ to worthy causes. Couldn't find the thread after doing a search, but recall that that had come up before. Hope someone else might help further.
Simon subscribes to a service that places the banner there. The content of the banner is determined by the topics on the page and is controlled for the most part by the provider. Simon gets a small fee every time someone clicks on one of the banner links. The small fee he recieves goes to offset funding of the website.
The ads that are posted are not a reflection of Simon's support or lack of support for any website that appears in the banner. Those sites pay the banner provider for the advertizing.
(a) I'm wondering if those who advertise here this way have to pay a fee, or what?
No one has to pay for the banner ads at the top of the page but people are free to donate towards the running costs of the site if they wish.
(b) Did e-watchman request this service from Simon?
Yes, I've put several banner ads up for people who have requested it.
The other ads, shown under the first post, come from Google and are based on the content of the page if possible (so hopefully are relevant). The money raised from this goes towards paying for the hosting costs. I don't control the specific adverts but can stop an advert appearing. Google have their own criteria for what adverts are and are not appropriate and they tend to be quite good.
In an ideal world, we wouldn't need ads but they really do help to take a chunk out of the site costs so hopefully people aren't too inconvenianced by them.
I am not bothered by them, in fact I rarely even notice them. I say you gotta do what you gotta do to keep the site open. Thanks for all the work you do!
