I went to the movie "2 worlds" , a danish movie that has been showing in europe. I took my daughter who left the jws first and had many experiences similar to the main character in the film. It was an excellent film, it was not overly critical of the jws but it certainly showed the degree of pressure and unloving behaviour behind the religion. The story is based on a newspaper interview from 3 years ago with a witness girl who is disfellowshipped and loses her family as a result, at the time she is 17 years old.
I was impressed at the response of her "worldly boyfriend", when he hears that Sara cannot talk to her older brother who is disfellowshipped for reading the wrong books and talking against the elders. The look of sheer astonishment and bewilderment on his face as he tries to grapple with what she has said. He tries to attend meetings and study for her sake but finally tells her he cant do it.
No child should have to go through what Sara did. My daughter told me that she only had the strength to stop because she knew we would never turn our backs on her. We left two years later and I thank my daughter for her strength, she showed the way.
The danish title is 2 verdener. Very good movie, thought provoking, saddening.
