JWs talk about Panorama

It seems that UK JWs are talking about Panorama...a lot.

I approached JWs I know with the simple question "so I suppose people are talking about Panorama?"

The response is generally one with no surprise, no fear, basically no problem at all! They've been told en masse or the news has spread like wildfire, at least in this area.

I may be wrong, but there has been no letter read in JW congs in the UK has there?

Unfortunately, they're primed with the responses:

* those interviewed are likely apostates or born-agains trying to make JWs look bad

* there will be very few cases cited and no real proof

* the society have had guidelines in place for a long time telling the elders to go straight to the police, so if elders are guilty, it must have happened years ago

* the problem is with local elders, not the society. local elders should have contacted the society for advise and didn't. Its a local problem, not a global one.

Most JWs I know are going to watch it. They are smugly thinking that no evidence will be shown. I really, really hope that panorama have done a good job and that the truth is revealed! One thing is for sure, there will be a big audience.

So the JW's actually believe:

the problem is with local elders, not the society. local elders should have contacted the society for advise and didn't. Its a local problem, not a global one.

Funny, in the Society's response to the Dateline NBC program here in the USA, they implied the same thing -- a few rogue elders here and there are not applying their "guidelines".

Funny how it's a local problem everywhere!!

Not really funny for the victims, though. The "two eyewitness or shut up" policy is backwards and harmful globally, not just locally.

Doesn't it seem odd that the dubs can have their own spin on words? "Born again" is like a swear word to a Dub, and if you call someone that, you're being disparaging in the extreme.

The logical next step is to accuse such ones of all kinds of evil, or to put the blame on them when things go wrong. "Shoot the messenger" or "shoot the apostate" or "shoot the 'born again'" becomes the order of the day.

Looking at it realistically, why on earth would a born again Christian go out of their way to make the Dubs look bad? It would be contrary to the very gospel that they follow.

Clearly, the Borg is worried and is flailing around, without giving direction to their responses.

I agree with you that its ridiculous to imagine that a born-again christian would lie and say they were JW and lie even more by saying they were an abused JW who never got help....

It just shows the lengths the JWs will go to to defend their Watchtower Borg.

Nothing has been mentioned at my hall, no letter, nothing. None of the brothers and sisters in my congregation has said anything about it. When something is buzzing you usually overhear lots of conversations about it before and after the meeting and in the groups for the ministry, but not this week.

All I do know is that up to yesterday morning our PO knew nothing of Dateline, let alone Panorama. It was a member of my family that told him, and that was because I made a point to ensure that all my family watched Dateline.

Another point that I might make that you may find very odd is that I know brothers and sisters in Rugby, and adjoining congregations in Warwickshire, and so do a lot of others in my congregation, but there seems to be a conspiracy of silence about the whole matter. When Nic posted the stuff about the arson attack, I had no idea why it was done! Ah well, the silence is over now.
