The Misery Of Being a Dub

How do you cope? I don't even vaguely remember. I've been browsing through some more PLN threads, and they all have one aspect in common - they are so EMPTY. That's the best way I can describe it...people type stuff into the little CGI forms, post it, but nothing ever really gets said there. So far I haven't seen a single flame war, a single vociferous post, a single argument. They're all in agreement.

It's almost like someone's running a script proggie to generate the posts, and the proggie is just randomly selecting words like "Jehovah", "Brother", and "Enlightenment" and making posts up. There's no DEPTH.

But then, life is very peaceful if you are a mental neuter.

Why would you want to strive for the supposed 'priveledge'(SP?) of carrying around a microphone? And then only if you were a man anyway? It must be frightfully boring being a woman in the BOrganization, knowing that you can never be more than a chief-gossip monger at best, or just a lowly dishcloth-attired old pioneer woman at worst.

I still remember the enormous sense of loneliness I felt when I was still in the BORG...it was like someone was pulling a fishhook through my medulla oblangata continously while I was at the meetings. I had memorised virtually every Watchtower study, didn't even need to look at the magazine/book to give amazing, intelligent answers (for a Dub), cite Bible verses, the whole tootie, but I was empty inside. There was nothing really happening inside my mind.

I was dying of a massive internal IQ loss.

Being a Dub is an experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone. You are so convinced that you are right, that there is no other possibility, even when your most basic beliefs seem like incredibly ludicrous fairy tales. You want to believe - and in my case I wanted to believe purely to please my parents. That's what it usually comes down to - who you wanna please. Most people want to please someone, and for me it was my folks.

Every time somebody challenges your notions, your automated anti-World gear kicks in and you start spouting theology endlessly, usually battering down anyone who doesn't have the astonishing amount of Biblical training you do fairly easily. When you do meet someone who is actually half-way intelligent and learned in such things, you dismiss everything they say as useless, since they are 'Wordly'. Thus, your mind neatly rejects anything that might disturb your cherished world view.

Contrast PLN to THIS site. Here we regularly have giant flame wars (such as the last one, which was quite hectic). Here we aren't afraid to lambast someone for saying something dumb - but on the other hand, we are also not afraid to truly show support for one another. Sure, we get people who attack the board and try to lure us into useless troll feeding orgies, but they usually burn out pretty soon. People on this board tend to be more jaded and wiser than most other boards I've chatted on on the Internet.

This is a good thing. This board is as addictive as crack cocaine, and I'm sorry I didn't find it years ago. It would have been so handy.

    Just my 0.02$.

Don't know if I'm wiser, but I'm definitely "jaded"! How I put up with the misery for 23 yrs. by my own choice as an adult is beyond me. I guess we are brain washed to believe that everyone else is happy and we are the only miserable one. So something must be wrong with me! I'm so glad to be out and glad that my kids didn't buy into the load of crap. And yes, I agree, this board is addictive and very helpful!

Well, you've put an excellent perspective to our flame wars.

    SYN,

May I add a "never been a JW" observation? I watched my mom change, much in the way you described as, "dying a massive internal IQ loss." Couldn't have come up with a better description myself. She no longer thinks things through (on her own) ANY conversation that she finds difficult, she will say, "I'll ask sister-so-in-so about THAT" However, those moments are rare because, I think ego has a lot to do with the zealous JW...she'd rather get hit in the head with a rock, than admit she doesn't know or she is wrong. THAT is the one thing the WT offers...a pre-made, formula answers.

I know this thread seemed to end a couple of days ago, but I must say how perfectly the post captured the life of a J W

Everything has to be said in the W T speak. Behind a painted smile.
Even at elders meetings one was never able to speak ones mind naturally. My wife says sometimes now when I reminice "Why didnt you tell them .........! . I say"Its just not like that"! you have to be theocratic.

To speak your mind and criticize an article would be "Independant thinking". If it does not make sense "Just wait a while and the spirit will make it clear" and if you entertain the idea enough you come to accept it ...

You're right about this board, sometimes rough, sometimes silly, but alive!.. and some absolute gems from real live people!!

SS: You got that right. I was as zealous as hell. Sometimes when people argued with me about religion, I would strike their entire line of argument down with a single sentence, and they would be flabbergasted. Of course, I was just recycling pre-manufactured answers in interesting ways, but it worked! People believe things too easily. I only exited because it was so empty and cold. Sometimes I have this horrible nightmare of a mental Catch-22 situation had I been in a very loving, large extended Dub family with a somewhat warm KH to attend - my nightmare borders on the fact that I might still be a Dub. But I have a feeling I would have stumbled upon this or some other Anti site pretty soon anyway, it was only a matter of time.

KBQ: Yeah, you hit the nail on ze head, ego is everything for a Dub. There's nothing like that rush when everything anyone who opposes you about your religion says is simple to counter with supposedly Biblical teachings. You just steam-roller them, since the average person has maybe 1% of the Biblical and theological knowledge of someone who has really been well programmed by the WTBTS.

It's quite simple. When your mind is full of Watchtower lore, there is no space for anything else. Human brains can multitask, but only to a limited degree, and the WTBTS meme demands complete dedication from your mind. Subtle, but enormously dangerous. LETHAL.

(no time to format, gotta get to bed, it's 1AM in South Africa...bye)
