This is the way I sent it - I don't know if they will run it or not.

Letter to the Editor Last week, newspapers all over the country reported a settlement to sexual abuse victims from within the Jehovah's Witnesses church. Reportedly, 16 victims have been compensated by the church, headquartered in Brooklyn New York. The settlement has not been disclosed, and the victims have been gagged in an effort of 'damage control'. However, beginning several years ago, this problem of pedophilia within the religion began to gather attention, when a prominent elder in Kentucky, Bill Bowen, resigned as an elder within the religion over such coverups. He was excomunicated from the church for his efforts to change the policies that lead to the church being a breeding ground for such actions. The problem stems from the groups' use of archaic Hebrew law to require that anyone claiming to be molested sexually must provide two or three witnesses to the crime in order for the elders in charge to take any action. Hence, pedophiles, who work their evil without two witnesses [which I would assume is always], cannot be charged and excomunicated from the religion. Further, the Watchtower society has instructed elders to contact the authorities only in the few states that require such reporting. Families have been instructed to keep such matters out of the public eye, so as not to bring 'reproach on Jehovah', the Hebrew God the religion worships. Additionally, no one in the congregation, outside of the elders involved, is ever informed of the matter in such cases, leaving the children exposed to danger. In some cases, those victims have been victimized a second time, to silence them, by excomunication as slanderers for trying to warn others in the congregations of the dangers, or just expressing their pain to others. Bill Bowen has formed a victims support group called Silentlambs, and since it's inception just a few years back, this group has been contacted by over 7000 victims. Experts are assessing that the problem, per capita, may be far larger than that of the Catholic Chuch, due to the insignificant size of this sect. But the pain they are causing by allowing these monsters to co-exist within the same congregations with many little children who are unaware, and knocking on the community doors of our homes, is unpardonable. Please protect yourself and your children. Get informed. Just google SilentLambs and get the facts. Or google Jehovah's Witnesses and sexual abuse. An educated public is our only protection against policies that hide pedophiles within the walls of churches. High on the list of reasons I left the religion myself after nearly 40 years was my awareness of this horrible allowance within the walls of the Kingdom Hall. I was, and am, personally ostracized within that group for leaving. For the record, I was never sexually abused, but I knew of some cases within the religion. I speak out in love for the unknowing children who may become the next victims of such isolationist religious groups.

    very good letter.

WAC - by all means. I hope everyone sends a letter to the editor - it would be a huge service to the community. BTW - I included links to the editor of the articles in several papers, and suggested they run the article since they have not done so locally.

Candidlynuts - good point. If they won't run it as is, I may slip something to that effect in the rewrite. Thanx. Jeff

Can I post anything to this topic at all.....? Looks like I can...

Forgive my fastidiousness, but I just had to edit your letter a bit:

    Letter to the Editor

Last week, the Associated Press reported on a settlement to sexual abuse victims from within the Jehovah's Witnesses (“JW”) church, which was printed in newspapers across the country. According to the report, 16 victims were awarded compensation by the church, which is headquartered in New York. The settlement amounts have not been disclosed, and the victims have been prohibited from speaking about the settlements due to a nondisclosure agreement, or gag order. Therefore this development will probably remain unknown to most ordinary people. However, beginning in 2002, the problem of pedophilia within the religion began to gather media attention when Dateline NBC aired a story about a molestation victim. Featured in the story was a prominent elder (the title for a JW congregational leader) in Kentucky, Bill Bowen, who resigned from his position in the congregation due to his disgust over the organization’s recommended concealment of an allegation of child abuse. After the Dateline special aired, he was excommunicated from the church due to his efforts to change the policies which allowed congregations to become breeding grounds for such horrible abuses.

The problem stems from the group’s use of an archaic Hebrew law in the book of Deuteronomy which requires that anyone charged with a crime must have two or three witnesses to corroborate the charge. Elders, by their own organizational instruction manual, are forbidden to take any action against allegations of child abuse based on the testimony of only one witness, the victim. Therefore pedophiles--who commit their evil acts in secret--cannot be charged with uncleanness and excommunicated from the religion. Further, the Watchtower Society (collectively meaning the publishing corporations founded in the late 19 th century, and the sect’s doctrinal architect and public leaders, the Governing Body) has instructed elders to contact the authorities only in the few states that require such reporting. Families have been instructed to keep such matters out of the public eye. Victims are warned that speaking out about their suffering would bring “reproach on Jehovah,” in other words, reproach on the reputation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. No other persons in the congregation, outside of the elders involved, are ever informed that there could be, or currently is, a pedophile in the congregation. This leaves the children of unsuspecting families exposed to danger. In some cases, parents of those poor victims have been victimized a second time by excommunication as “slanderers” for trying to warn others in the congregations of a pedophile amongst them, or for just expressing their pain to others. If rumor spreads that the expelled person was guilty of “apostasy”--which in the JW church means not completely agreeing with all doctrine and policy of the Watchtower Society--then all testimony from the expelled person is dismissed by current members as a lie.

Bill Bowen has formed a victims’ support group called Silentlambs, and since its inception in 2001, this group has been contacted by over 7,000 victims. Experts are assessing that the problem, per capita, may be far larger than the Catholic Church’s own pedophile problem, due to the comparatively much smaller membership of the sect. The pain they are causing by allowing these monsters to co-exist in congregations with many potential little victims, and the danger of allowing known pedophiles to canvass neighborhood homes, is unpardonable. Please, protect yourself and your children. Get information on this growing problem. You can visit silentlambs.org for information and help for child abuse victims in this church. An educated public is our only protection against policies that hide pedophiles within the walls of churches.

High on the list of reasons why I left the religion myself after nearly 40 years of membership was my awareness of this horrible policy of not reporting every single allegation of child abuse to the proper authorities. Although I was never sexually abused, I personally knew of some cases within the congregation. I speak out in love for the unknowing children who may become the next victims of the Watchtower Society’s reprehensible child abuse reporting policy.

The sad reality, is that most newspapers would refrain from printing such a letter. As they do not want to get involved, unless there was a well known case locally.
